A short buy is a rebuy for less than the table's minimum buy-in.
Typically, casinos allow a limited number of short buys by players at a table. Some casinos limit it to one per session, others insist that a player do no more than one short buy in a row (e.g. you must do a full buy after a short buy). Some casinos do not allow short buys at all, though this is rare.
