The term dealer has two meanings in poker:
- The player who has the dealer button in front of them and is therefore the nominal dealer, who acts last in certain games with a predetermined order of action such as hold 'em. See the Button article for more discussion of this dealer.
- The casino employee who in addition to distributing the cards keeps the game running and acts as a first-level referee. This dealer is the subject of this article.
