In poker, one (1) big bet equals the allowed bet size on the Turn or River (for limit games). This is usually two times the Big Blind.

Big Bets are used to "normalize" pot sizes. Think of it this way: Throwing $80 into the pot for a $10/$20 game is relatively more money than throwing $80 into the pot in a $20/$40 game.
